Five Signs Your Old Website Is Costing You Customers

A website that's a few years old doesn't announce that it's losing you business. It just quietly does — visitors leave, and you never find out they were there. Here are five common warning signs.

1. It doesn't work properly on a phone

Most visitors to a small local business's site are on a phone, not a laptop. If text is too small to read, buttons are hard to tap, or the layout breaks, people leave within seconds — long before they've read a word about what you offer.

2. There's no easy way to contact you

If your phone number is buried at the bottom of a page in tiny text, or there's no WhatsApp link or contact form, you're relying on visitors to hunt for a way to reach you. Most won't bother.

3. The information is out of date

Old opening hours, services you no longer offer, or prices that changed two years ago all send the same message: nobody's looking after this. That's a bad first impression before a customer has even spoken to you.

4. It's slow to load

A page that takes several seconds to appear — often because of huge, uncompressed images — loses visitors before they see anything at all. Speed isn't a nice-to-have; it's the difference between someone staying or leaving.

5. It doesn't say what you do, clearly, immediately

A visitor should be able to tell what you do, who it's for, and how to get in touch within a few seconds of arriving — without scrolling through paragraphs to find it. If your homepage opens with a slogan rather than a clear statement, you're making people work for information they should get instantly.
