Why We Built an Open-Source Alternative to Paid eCommerce Platforms
A lot of eCommerce platforms are genuinely capable — and come with ongoing licensing costs, vendor lock-in, or infrastructure requirements that don't fit every business. We wanted an option that didn't force that trade-off.
The problem we kept seeing
Smaller stores often end up choosing between paying recurring licence fees indefinitely, or being tied into a specific vendor's ecosystem for payments, themes, and hosting. Neither is wrong for every business — but neither should be the only option either.
What we built instead
CommerceCore is a free, open-source eCommerce platform built on PHP 8.3 and SQLite — deliberately chosen so it installs on standard shared hosting, without a DevOps team or a Node.js build pipeline. It covers the product types, checkout flows, and admin tools a real store needs, with a plugin architecture for payments and shipping that can be extended without touching core code.

What we're not claiming
